The Magnetic South
With Taubken Film & Video for Stax Museum
Director: Kyle Taubken
My Role: Illustrator and Animator
The Magnetic South: All Signs Point to Soulsville USA is a film that was part of Stax Museum’s 2022 Black History Month virtual tour. From Stax: “The Magnetic South” looks at how four individuals – Al Bell, Bettye Crutcher, Al Jackson, Jr., and Mavis Staples – were drawn to the opportunities at Soulsville USA, how the community influenced them, what they contributed, and how their legacies continue to inform and inspire the personal and professional journeys of musicians across Memphis.”
Towards the end of 2021, Kyle reached out to me after he and the folks at Stax had an idea for a small animation to accompany a small segment in the film. By the end of our conversation, I had offered to do the main intro, 4 title card intros, and a few other supplemental animations, which they wholeheartedly accepted. Kyle, and Stax, were both so trusting and such great collaborators to work with.
Below is a short reel of my contributions to the film as well as all of the main illustrations.
